英語4技能試験対策に欠かせないのが英単語の暗記です。ボキャブラリーが少なければ、「読む」「聞く」「書く」「話す」を総合的に伸ばすことはできません。しかし、単語帳で英単語をひたすら暗記し続けるのは辛いですよね。
そこで、シリーズでお送りしていく「英検2級レベル以上の単語を世界の国歌で覚えよう」では、英語圏の国歌を使って英単語の意味を紹介していきます。第1弾となる今回はアメリカ合衆国の国歌を使います。楽しみながら英語学習していただければ幸いです。
アメリカ合衆国の国歌
まずは歌詞全体をチェックしてみましょう。市販の単語帳を参照し、英検2級レベル以上の単語をハイライトしました。
The Star-Spangled Banner（星条旗）
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

ここからは歌詞を区切って、ハイライトした単語の意味を確認しながら見ていきましょう。歌詞で歌われている情景を想像してみてください。

① dawn：夜明け

② hail：歓呼して迎える
例）The people in the stadium hailed the winner.
③ gleam：微光、光

まとめ
難しい英単語を全部で9個、覚えることができましたか？アメリカ合衆国の国歌はタイトルに”Star(星)”が入っていて、「光るもの」に関する単語が多く登場しますね。情景をイメージしながら覚えることで、記憶に定着しやすくなりますよ。
ちなみに、この歌詞の情景は19世紀初頭の米英戦争の一コマに由来していて、英国艦隊の激しい夜間砲撃にもかかわらず、夜明けになると米国の砦に星条旗が燦然と翻っていたことに感動し、その勇猛さを賛美した詩から作られたそうです。なお、曲名を「星条旗を永遠なれ」という人がいますが、これはまったく別の曲です。
